A FULL MONTH OF ART EXHIBITION AND EVENTS

FREE EVENT - MARCH 2010

CRYSTAL CITY (ARLINGTON), VA - An office building will get a radical makeover into a progressive, contemporary exhibition space as G-40: The Summit rolls into Crystal City this March 2010. An artistic interpretation of the G-20 political summit, the G-40 will occupy 75,000 square feet of exhibit space with four floors. Each floor will have 10-30 featured artists who will activate the space with murals and installations, setting the mood for their state.

Sponsored by The Crystal City BID and Vornado, and curated by Art Whino the mission of G-40: The Summit is to bring the leaders of the New Brow genre of contemporary underground art together in an effort to explore, discuss and grow this movement, which has influences ranging from contemporary urban, to street art, stencil and graffiti. Different hubs of the New Brow movement will be showcased at G-40 including DC, New York, and California, in addition to international work.

Throughout the month of the exhibit, G-40 will host musical and visual performances, lectures, and more. From live mural painting to resident DJ’s, G-40:The Summit presents a dynamic new gallery experience bringing visionary artists from across the world to Crystal City.

Last night, I decided to work on an older painting that I have neglected for a while. I haven't worked this large (4'x5') in a while, and got to work on the floor again, which I love!
This painting, amongst others from the past and many from this year will be on view, May 11th through June 15th at Verlaine, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
I've decided not to have an opening reception for this show, but all work will be available for your purchasing pleasure. :)

Coral Castle

It has been over a week since I've posted on my blog..but, I have a good reason. I was in Miami! One of my favorite places while there (besides visiting family and sunbathing, ofcourse) was the Coral Castle.

"The Coral Castle was built by one man, working alone. It took him 20 years to build-from 1920-1940. His name is Edward Leedskalnin. Ed was born in Latvia in 1887 and died in Miami in 1951. He was 64. When Ed was 26, he was engaged to marry Agnes Scuffs who was 10 years younger than he was. He always referred to her as "Sweet Sixteen". On the day before the wedding, she told Ed she did not want to marry him because he was too old for her...

For reasons unknown to us, Ed chose to carve a castle of coral in dedication to "Sweet Sixteen". What makes Ed's work remarkable is the fact that he was five feet tall and weighed 100 pounds. The remarkable feat was in cutting and moving huge coral blocks single-handedly using hand tools..." (taken from Coral Castle tour guide pamphlet).

Rit Dye

Remember Rit Dye? Back in January, I was hired for a prop styling job on another photo shoot. The assignment was to use Rit Dye on children's pine chairs and Keds sneakers. Well, I guess they liked my work because they hired me again! The assignment this time was to dye sneakers again using a few colors on each, using different designs and techniques. This is what I made last night. I was thinking about adding, "dye specialist" to my artist bio. Anyone want some Rit dyed clothing, shoes, or something crafty like dyed papers made by me? Hit me up! These are some sketches I did of some surreal plants and the number two. I've had this idea to use these plants in my paintings and have started placing them here and there in sketches. The number two is a play on the same texture of the plants, and I'd like to incorporate more numbers and letters in my work. I've always loved calligraphy and the gesture of writing letters in general..its a great exercise and adds a lot of depth with the layering I like to do. Enjoy.

So, I was reminiscing on some older stop-motion animations a friend (Sol) and I made..and thought I'd post a couple we made together.."octopenis" and "apple-worm." We made these in one day for each! I miss making animations and I recently took a continuing education class at Cooper Union for animation..it was short and sweet, but atleast I know the ins and outs of what I can accomplish in an animation and the programs I need to achieve its finished look. In short, many more to come..(no pun intended.)

This is a video I made showing the steps I took during my painting process. This painting was an assignment for a group show on Global Politics. I thought it would be out of my element, but had a lot of fun painting this one! For the past couple years I've been incorporating collage in some of my work. So, for this painting I decided to paint in a collage style, without using collage. A direction my work is definitely leaning towards. I hope you enjoy it...even though I didn't get ALL the layers in the video. Next time! And I may even add audio..oh yes. I'll be posting a very clear photo of the painting soon. For our honeymoon, my husband and I went to Japan. I could write forever on how beautiful and lovely it was being there..but, that would take too long. One thing I will always remember were the smells. One particular smell was that of the female Ginkgo tree. Imagine the smelliest of socky cheeses mixed with fresh mulch and you're there. The odor came from the ground beneath the tree where its fruit would land and get constantly smashed and ground into the sidewalk by pedestrians. It wasn't only the odor that impressed me. It was the shape of the Ginkgo leaf. How elegant and dainty of a leaf? I collected some fallen leaves off the ground and brought them back home with me..to draw. I've since become a little obsessed, and draw them constantly. These two drawings are the beginnings of a design I'm working on for a sticker. I haven't mastered the hand in the leaf yet. My next drawing is to make the leaf have two fists instead of one. Because after all, that odor was pretty strong.

Pssst...wanna know a secret? I am starting to make hand designs. I've had this idea to use hands in illustrating for a while, and here is my first. I'm sure you've drawn a face to talk with on your hand at least once in your life. No? I'm the only one? Well, stay tuned for more unusual uses of hands in the days to come. This drawing is colored pencil and pencil on paper.

I've always wanted to be able to breathe under water. I've come to realize that probably isn't going to happen. So, I'll leave it up to this kid to report back to me, on the life of a fish. For this drawing, I used charcoal on kraft paper.

For my first entry, I thought I'd share with you one of my favorite drawings in charcoal. What is better than a boy in a panda suit? I drew this while taking a break from the paintbrush a few weeks ago, and it sparked a missing flame in my work. I've decided to draw more than I usually do. Whether it be charcoal on white paper, kraft paper, pencil in a sketchbook, or pen on a napkin..I'll be sharing more drawings with you starting today. Please enjoy!
